The Impulse of Buying a Pet during Lockdown

Lockdown is not a time for impulse buying animals without considering their future. No matter how tempting it is. Searches for puppies have doubled as lockdown restrictions were enforced. However, this is strongly discouraged as there is a worry that these animals will be abandoned as soon as life goes back to normal, and that has already started to show. "If you are considering getting a pet during these uncertain times, it's important to remember taking on an animal is a huge commitment and it's irresponsible to do so unless you're really able to care for them in the long term," says a spokesperson from Battersea Dogs Home, in the UK.
The impulse buying of pets under lockdown conditions is likely to create long-term welfare problems for these animals. Concerns include behavioral issues arising from limited opportunities for socialization during the lockdown, post-lockdown regrets about buying a puppy, and more unscrupulous selling of underage and poorly bred puppies leading to serious health problems in the future. Many in this cohort are likely to be given up or abandoned as their owners become unable to cope – particularly as a result of behavioral issues that develop after periods of lockdown. Although it is highly encouraged to adopt - in fact, it can save an animal’s life - just make sure you are ready for the commitment.
